💮 Description:
Commonly known as the Needle Bottlebrush or Flinders Ranges Bottlebrush, Callistemon teretifolius is a hardy, medium-sized shrub native to Australia. Known for its striking red flower spikes with purple tips, it blooms in spring and summer, attracting a range of birdlife. The needle-like evergreen leaves add texture to the plant, while its resilience to drought, poor soils, and coastal conditions makes it an ideal choice for tough garden environments.

🌳 Key Features:

  • Flowers: Bright red bottlebrush spikes with purple tips, blooming in spring and summer
  • Foliage: Needle-like, evergreen leaves
  • Height: Grows up to 2 meters in height
  • Uses: Perfect as a feature plant, for screening, or attracting birds
  • Hardiness: Drought-tolerant, withstands poor soils, coastal conditions, and wind
  • Growth Rate: Moderate

☀️ Climate Suitability:

  • Thrives in a variety of climates, particularly in dry, coastal, and harsh environments.
  • Well-suited for gardens in regions with low water availability or poor soil quality.

🌱 Growing Conditions:

  • Position: Prefers full sun to part shade, ideal for coastal or dry areas
  • Soil: Requires free-draining soil to thrive
  • Watering: Once established, it is highly drought-tolerant, requiring minimal watering
  • Growth Rate: Moderate, becoming a compact shrub in ideal conditions

🌱 Propagation Instructions:

  1. Sowing Time:
Best sown in spring or early summer, when the soil temperature is warm (18-22°C).
  2. Sowing Medium:
Use a well-draining seed-raising mix to promote optimal germination.
  3. Sowing Depth:
Sprinkle the seeds evenly on the surface of the soil. Do not cover, as they require light for germination.
  4. Watering:
Place the seed tray in a shallow container of water to allow moisture absorption from below. Remove the tray once the surface is moist, but avoid waterlogging.
  5. Maintain Moisture and Warmth:
Keep the soil moist, but ensure it is not waterlogged. Maintain consistent temperatures between 18-22°C for best results.
  6. Germination Timeframe:
Expect germination to occur within 14-30 days under ideal conditions.
  7. Seedling Care:
Once seedlings have emerged, keep them in a well-ventilated area with bright, indirect light. When the seedlings have developed strong roots and a few leaves, transplant them into pots with quality potting mix. Gradually acclimate them to outdoor conditions before planting them in their permanent location.

⚠️ Additional Notes:

  • This hardy shrub is ideal for tough garden environments, including dry or coastal areas where other plants may struggle.
  • It’s an excellent choice for creating natural privacy screens or as a feature plant in low-maintenance gardens.
  • Callistemon teretifolius is also a bird magnet, attracting nectar-feeding birds due to its abundant flowers.
  • *Aboriginal people traditionally enjoyed the sweet nectar from the flowers. *(do not attempt to consume any part of this plant without proper knowledge and guidance. Always consult an expert before foraging or consuming plants.)
