Acacia falcata – Sickle Wattle

Family: Fabaceae
Packet Size: 40 seeds

Description

Acacia falcata, known as Sickle Wattle or Burra, is an eastern Australian native shrub recognised by its gracefully curved, sickle-shaped leaves. Its slender, sometimes arching branches give it a lighter appearance than many dense wattles.

Cream to pale-yellow round flower heads are carried in clusters during the cooler months, often from early winter. The combination of silvery-green foliage and subtle flowers makes it useful in naturalistic plantings and suitable revegetation projects.

Key Features

  • Flowers: Small cream or pale-yellow globular heads, usually in early winter.
  • Foliage: Narrow to broad, noticeably curved grey-green leaves with a prominent central vein.
  • Plant habit: Open, slender shrub, commonly about 2–5 m tall depending on conditions.
  • Garden uses: Native garden borders, grouped planting and appropriately planned revegetation.

Growing Conditions

  • Position: Full sun produces the strongest growth.
  • Soil: Prefers well-drained soils and occurs naturally on rocky or shale-based sites.
  • Watering: Water young seedlings while establishing; avoid persistently wet soil.
  • Climate: Adapted to a range of eastern Australian conditions and generally tolerates some frost once established.
  • Pruning: Light pruning after flowering may encourage a bushier shape.

Seed Propagation

  1. Prepare: For the hard seed coat, gently rub a small area with fine sandpaper or carefully nick the coat without damaging the seed inside. Soak in room-temperature water for approximately 12–24 hours before sowing.
  2. Sow: Plant approximately 5 mm deep in a clean, freely draining seed-raising mix and firm gently.
  3. Position: Place in a warm, bright, sheltered spot out of harsh midday sun while seedlings are small.
  4. Moisture: Keep the mix evenly moist but not saturated.
  5. Germination: Timing varies with seed age, nicking or scratching the seed coat and temperature. Continue to monitor the tray if emergence is uneven.
  6. Transplant: Move seedlings to individual pots once they have established their first true leaves and can be handled safely.

Growing Note: This is a relatively open, slender wattle rather than a dense screening hedge.

Germination advice: These instructions are a recommended guide. Germination results and timing may vary depending on seed freshness, storage, temperature and growing conditions. Alternative propagation methods may also be successful.
