Delonix regia – Orange Fire Poinciana

Family: Fabaceae
Packet Size: 10 seeds

Description

Orange Fire Poinciana is an orange-flowering parent selection of the famous Delonix regia, a tropical ornamental originating from Madagascar. Large flower clusters rise above delicate fern-like leaves, bringing brilliant seasonal colour to the landscape.

In warm conditions poincianas become handsome, broadly spreading trees with a distinctive horizontal branch structure. They can shed leaves in cooler or drier weather before the next growth flush.

Key Features

  • Flowering: Parent selection known for vivid orange blooms in generous clusters.
  • Foliage: Fine, twice-divided leaves, providing filtered shade.
  • Form: Wide umbrella-like crown with a dramatic mature silhouette.

Growing Conditions

  • Light: Full sun for best flowering.
  • Soil: Good drainage and adequate rooting space.
  • Climate: Tropical and warm subtropical gardens; protect young plants from frosts.
  • Care: Water during establishment, prune judiciously and avoid cramped planting locations.

Propagation from Seed

  1. Prepare: Lightly nick or file the water-impermeable seed coat in a small area away from the embryo, then soak overnight in lukewarm water.
  2. Sow: Cover with around 10–15 mm of clean, free-draining seed mix.
  3. Germinate: Maintain warm conditions and gentle moisture without waterlogging.
  4. Grow on: Transplant seedlings carefully into deep pots before planting out.

Seed-Grown Variation

“Orange Fire” identifies the parent selection; seed-raised plants may display natural variation in flower colour and are not guaranteed to be identical to the parent.

Growing Note

Allow ample space for an extensive root system and spreading crown; check local planting suitability.

Germination advice: These instructions are a recommended guide. Germination results and timing may vary depending on seed freshness, storage, temperature and growing conditions. Alternative propagation methods may also be successful.
