Description
Moringa oleifera – Drumstick Tree
Family: Moringaceae
Packet Size: 8 seeds
Description
Moringa oleifera, often called Drumstick Tree, is a quick-growing tropical species native to the Indian subcontinent. Its airy, finely divided foliage, clusters of small creamy-white flowers and unusually long, slender seed pods give it a distinctive appearance.
Well suited to warm gardens with excellent drainage, it is also cultivated for its edible young leaves and pods when correctly identified and prepared. It may lose leaves during cooler or drier periods and should be given room to grow rather than planted in confined beds.
Key Features
- Foliage: Fine, feathery compound leaves on a light, open canopy.
- Flowers: Small white-to-cream flowers in loose clusters.
- Pods: Long, slender fruit that gives the Drumstick Tree its common name.
Growing Conditions
- Position: Full sun with good air circulation.
- Soil: Deep, freely draining soil; prolonged waterlogging can damage roots.
- Climate: Tropical and warm subtropical conditions; sensitive to frost.
- Care: Water young plants in dry weather, then reduce excess watering as they establish.
Propagation from Seed
- Prepare: Use clean, mature seeds; hard nicking or scratching the seed coat is not generally required.
- Sow: Plant roughly 1–2 cm deep in a deep pot of well-draining seed-raising mix.
- Germinate: Maintain steady warmth and light moisture without saturating the mix.
- Grow on: Transplant before roots become crowded and gradually harden off in full sun.
Growing Note
Grow only where local conditions and regulations allow. The supplied seeds are intended for propagation, not consumption; use of plant parts for food requires correct identification and preparation.
Germination advice: These instructions are a recommended guide. Germination results and timing may vary depending on seed freshness, storage, temperature and growing conditions. Alternative propagation methods may also be successful.
