Description
Beaucarnea recurvata – Ponytail Palm / Elephant’s Foot
Family: Asparagaceae
Packet: 10 seeds
Description
This slow-growing Mexican ornamental develops a conspicuous swollen trunk base that stores water, with a fountain of long, narrow, arching leaves above it. Despite its common name it is not a true palm.
Key Features
- Foliage Colour: Green
- Plant habit: Swollen-base evergreen tree
- Garden interest and important notes: The caudex becomes more pronounced with age. Grown in pots it makes a striking patio or bright indoor specimen; in frost-free landscapes it can develop into a substantial feature plant.
Growing Conditions
- Position: Bright light or full sun once established; introduce small seedlings to stronger light gradually.
- Soil: Sharply drained sandy potting mix with plenty of air around the roots.
- Water: Water young seedlings moderately; let the surface dry between waterings once established.
- Climate: Warm and dry to subtropical conditions; protect from frost, especially when young.
Seed Propagation
- Prepare: Use clean, viable seed; no boiling-water treatment is necessary.
- Sow: Sow shallowly into free-draining seed mix and lightly cover.
- Germination conditions: Keep warm, around 22–28°C, and just moist rather than saturated.
- After germination: Pot on when seedlings are established, avoiding damage to the developing swollen base.
Germination depends on seed freshness, temperature and growing conditions.
Germination advice: These instructions are a recommended guide. Germination results and timing may vary depending on seed freshness, storage, temperature and growing conditions. Alternative propagation methods may also be successful.
