Description
An iconic Australian native, Lemon Myrtle (Backhousia citriodora) is a stunning rainforest tree celebrated for its intensely fragrant leaves and beautiful, fluffy white flowers. The leaves contain a powerful lemon-scented oil, making them a prized ingredient in culinary dishes, teas, and natural household products. This versatile evergreen can be grown as a small feature tree or pruned to form a dense, aromatic screen or hedge, bringing both beauty and utility to your garden.

💮 Key Features

  • Intense Fragrance: The leaves release a powerful, sweet lemon aroma when crushed, stronger than true lemons.

  • Culinary & Medicinal: Widely used to flavour food and teas, and valued for its antimicrobial essential oils.

  • Beautiful Blooms: Produces masses of creamy-white, fluffy flowers in summer and autumn that are highly attractive to bees and other pollinators.

  • Lush Evergreen Foliage: Features glossy, dark green leaves year-round, with new growth often appearing in reddish tones.

  • Versatile Size: Can be kept as a shrub or hedge with regular pruning, or grown into a small tree, typically reaching 3–8 metres in cultivation.

  • Screening Plant: Its dense growth habit makes it an excellent choice for a natural, fragrant privacy screen.

☀️ Growing Conditions

  • Climate: Thrives in tropical and subtropical climates but can be grown in warm temperate zones if protected from frost when young.

  • Position: Prefers a position in full sun to partial shade. In hotter climates, protection from the harsh afternoon sun is beneficial.

  • Soil: Best in rich, well-draining soil with plenty of organic matter. Tolerant of a range of soil types, including clays, if drainage is adequate. A neutral to slightly acidic pH is ideal.

  • Watering: Water regularly to keep the soil moist, especially when the plant is young and during dry spells. It is fairly drought-tolerant once established.

  • Container Growing: Can be successfully grown in a large pot indoors or outdoors with adequate sun and consistently moist soil.

🌱 Propagation Instructions
Note: Lemon Myrtle seeds can be challenging and slow to germinate, requiring patience.

  1. Sowing Time: Spring is the ideal time to plant. Sowing can also be done in a greenhouse or with a heat mat during cooler months.

  2. Pre-treatment: Soak the seed capsules in water for at least 12-24 hours to help soften them.

  3. Sowing Medium: Use a high-quality, sterile seed-raising mix. Adding perlite, vermiculite, or sand will improve drainage, which is crucial.

  4. Sowing Depth: Sow the entire fruit capsule (or the fine seeds if they have separated) just under the surface of the soil and cover lightly.

  5. Position & Moisture: Place the pot or tray in a warm, bright location out of direct sunlight. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged by misting regularly.

  6. Germination: Germination is variable and can take anywhere from 3 to 8 weeks in optimal conditions.
