Description
Sphaeropteris cooperi – Lacy Tree Fern
Family: Cyatheaceae
Packet size: Approximately 10,000+ spores (not seeds)
Origin: Australian native
Fast-growing tree fern with a slender trunk and large lacy fronds. Best suited to warm temperate to subtropical sheltered gardens.
Growing Conditions
- Light: Filtered light to part shade
- Growing medium: Moist, organic-rich, free-draining growing medium
- Water: Water regularly in dry weather; shelter young ferns from harsh sun and wind
Propagation from Spores
- Prepare a clean, moist growing medium in a clean covered container. Avoid contaminating the medium.
- Sow spores on the surface of sterile, damp growing medium; keep enclosed and humid in bright indirect light; transplant only after small ferns establish Do not bury the fine spores.
- Maintain humidity and monitor for green green growth; development of young ferns can take weeks to months or longer.
- Gradually acclimatise established young ferns to lower humidity before potting or mounting.
Important: Fern spores are dust-fine and require different propagation methods from seeds. The approximate spore count is not a germination guarantee. Keep the container clean and avoid direct harsh sun.
