Clivia Nobilis – Plant Information

  • Genus: Clivia
  • ๐ŸŒธ Common name: Bush lily, Natal lily, or Kaffir lily
  • ๐Ÿ”„ Life Cycle: Perennial
  • ๐ŸŒผ Season of interest: Late Winter to Spring (flowers), year-round foliage
  • ๐Ÿงก๐Ÿ’š Colour: Orange-red to scarlet, often with distinctive green tips on pendulous (hanging) flowers; rich green foliage
  • ๐ŸŒฟ Features: Striking flowering plant, attractive berries (often long-lasting and red), evergreen foliage
  • ๐Ÿชด Soil type: Well-drained, rich in organic matter. A mix of โ…” Peat moss to โ…“ Perlite or similar soft, airy potting mix is ideal.
  • Growth habit: Clumping
  • ๐Ÿก Indoor/outdoor: Thrives outdoors in suitable climates; can be grown indoors as a potted plant
  • ๐ŸŒณ Garden uses: Excellent for shaded borders, under trees, patios, and containers. Their roots prefer to be undisturbed once established.
  • โ˜€๏ธ Sunlight: Prefers full shade to partial shade. Early morning sun or dappled light is ideal. Protect from direct, harsh afternoon sun.
  • ๐ŸŒก๏ธ Climate: Mediterranean, subtropical, or warm temperate climates. Protect from frost.
  • ๐Ÿ’ง Watering: Medium. Water well in Spring and Summer, allowing the topsoil to dry slightly between waterings. Reduce watering significantly in Autumn and Winter.
  • ๐Ÿ‘ Cultivating difficulty: Easy
  • ๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ Country of origin: South Africa
  • ๐Ÿ“ Grows up to: Approximately 45-60 cm high and 80 cm wide.

Care and Maintenance

  • โœ‚๏ธ Pruning: After flowering, cut back the flower stalk to the base of the stem. Prune any browning or damaged leaves as needed.
  • ๐Ÿงช Feeding: Mulch around the base of the plant and apply a balanced liquid fertiliser (such as Seasol Seaweed Concentrate) in Summer to support growth and flowering.
  • ๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Protection: Protect from direct, harsh afternoon sunlight and frost.
  • โœ… General: Clivia are low maintenance and can be quite tough in dry conditions once established. They thrive particularly well under the shade of trees. They look fantastic potted on a patio as their roots prefer to be undisturbed, as long as they are not overwatered.

Germination Method Recommendation

Thank you for purchasing. The following is the germination method that we recommend:

  1. Prepare your mix: Get a good quality seed-raising mix (available at garden centres like Bunnings) or create a soft soil mix such as โ…” Peat moss and โ…“ Perlite.
  2. Fill the pot: Place your chosen soil mix into a pot or seed tray.
  3. Sow the seeds: Place the Clivia nobilis seeds on the surface of the soil. Gently press them halfway into the soil so that approximately half of the seed is still visible.
  4. Moisture: Keep the soil consistently moist but not soaked. Overwatering can lead to rot.
  5. Germination: You should see a shoot emerge within 10-14 days, though it can sometimes take longer.
  6. Nudge if needed: If the seedling appears to be pushing out of the soil, gently push it further down to ensure the roots are well-anchored.
  7. Light & Feeding: Once the plant has produced a few leaves, it’s ready for its permanent spot. Clivia will thrive in the shade with filtered light and limited direct sunlight. Begin fertilising with Seasol Seaweed Concentrate (or similar) once a month.
  8. Enjoy your flowers!

* Another method: You could also try wrapping the seeds in a damp (not dripping wet) paper towel and placing them inside a zip-lock bag. Place the bag in a warm, dry place (like a windowsill) until you see shoots start to form. Once sprouted, carefully transfer them to a seed-raising mix as described above. (You could try both methods to see which one you prefer.)
