Description
Bauhinia variegata – White-flowered Orchid Tree
Family: Fabaceae
Packet Size: 8 seeds
Description
This white-flowering selection of Bauhinia variegata is grown for broad, ivory-white, orchid-like flowers and the attractive two-lobed foliage for which orchid trees are known. It originates from a species native to southern Asia.
In suitable warm climates it can form a striking lawn or courtyard feature, with an open, spreading crown. Some leaf fall in cooler or drier periods is normal.
Key Features
- Flowers: Large white blooms, sometimes marked around the throat, borne on the branch ends.
- Leaves: Broad butterfly-shaped leaves divided into two rounded lobes.
- Garden use: Showy ornamental feature tree or seasonal flowering focal point.
Growing Conditions
- Light: Full sun to a lightly sheltered sunny position.
- Soil: Well-drained, moderately fertile soil with regular watering during establishment.
- Climate: Warm subtropical or tropical areas; protect seedlings and young trees from frost.
- Care: Provide space for a broad canopy and prune only as necessary to shape.
Propagation from Seed
- Prepare: Soak seeds in lukewarm water overnight. A careful, light nick of the seed coat may help seeds that remain impermeable.
- Sow: Sow 5–10 mm deep in a well-drained propagation medium.
- Germinate: Keep warm and lightly moist; avoid cold, wet conditions.
- Pot on: Transplant into individual pots once the root systems are developed.
Seed-Grown Variation
Seed from a white-flowering parent may produce seedlings with some variation in bloom colour. White flowers cannot be guaranteed for every seedling.
Growing Note
Before planting, consider local weed guidance for ornamental orchid trees, particularly near native vegetation.
Germination advice: These instructions are a recommended guide. Germination results and timing may vary depending on seed freshness, storage, temperature and growing conditions. Alternative propagation methods may also be successful.
