Description
Libidibia ferrea – Leopard Tree
Family: Fabaceae
Packet Size: 10 seeds
Description
Libidibia ferrea, previously known as Caesalpinia ferrea, is a Brazilian tree prized for its beautifully mottled trunk. As patches of bark shed, they reveal a leopard-like pattern that adds year-round interest even when the tree is not flowering.
Fine, compound foliage creates a light canopy, making this an appealing feature or shade tree in gardens with enough space for its mature size. It belongs to the legume family and is native to north-eastern Brazil.
Key Features
- Bark: Distinctive cream, brown and grey mottled patches developing with maturity.
- Foliage: Small leaflets on finely divided, compound leaves.
- Habit: Medium to large ornamental tree with an elegant, spreading crown.
Growing Conditions
- Position: Full sun in a warm, open site with room for the canopy and roots.
- Soil: Freely draining soil; avoid prolonged waterlogging.
- Climate: Tropical to warm subtropical conditions; young plants need frost protection.
- Care: Water during establishment and train a strong central framework while young.
Propagation from Seed
- Prepare: Gently nick or sand a small area of the hard seed coat away from the embryo, then soak overnight in lukewarm water.
- Sow: Place seeds about 10 mm deep in clean, freely draining propagation mix.
- Germinate: Keep consistently warm and slightly moist rather than saturated.
- Pot on: Transplant carefully once the seedlings have well-developed roots, then gradually acclimatise to stronger sun.
Growing Note
The tree can grow substantial roots and a broad crown; avoid planting near foundations or confined paving, and check local suitability before planting.
Germination advice: These instructions are a recommended guide. Germination results and timing may vary depending on seed freshness, storage, temperature and growing conditions. Alternative propagation methods may also be successful.
