Description
Magnolia grandiflora ‘Teddy Bear’ – seed from a compact parent
Family: Magnoliaceae
Packet Size: 5 seeds
Description
Teddy Bear Magnolia is the familiar trade name for a compact, upright selection of Magnolia grandiflora, admired for its rounded dark-green leaves with soft, rusty-brown undersides. Mature parent plants carry large, sweetly scented white flowers in the warmer months.
This seed packet comes from a parent listed as ‘Teddy Bear’. Seedlings can produce beautiful evergreen magnolias, but individual seedlings may differ substantially from the parent in size, foliage, shape, or flowering age.
Key Features
- Flowers: Large, fragrant creamy-white flowers on the parent selection.
- Foliage: Leathery, glossy leaves with velvety brown beneath.
- Habit: Parent is compact and upright; seedlings may grow larger or more broadly.
Growing Conditions
- Position: Full sun to partial shade in a sheltered position.
- Soil: Moist, organic-rich, well-draining soil; usually performs well in a slightly acidic medium.
- Climate: Warm temperate to subtropical gardens with adequate moisture.
- Care: Water young plants deeply and mulch, while keeping the trunk base clear.
Propagation from Seed
- Stratify: Cold-stratify the supplied, cleaned seeds in a barely moist, clean medium in the fridge (about 1–5°C) for around 3–6 months; check periodically for mould and keep the medium from drying out.
- Sow: Sow shallowly into free-draining propagation mix and keep consistently moist.
- Grow on: Pot seedlings carefully as roots develop, and allow plenty of space to grow.
Seed-Grown Variation
These are Magnolia grandiflora seedlings from a ‘Teddy Bear’ parent, not guaranteed copies of the named cultivar.
Germination advice: These instructions are a recommended guide. Germination results and timing may vary depending on seed freshness, storage, temperature and growing conditions. Alternative propagation methods may also be successful.
