Description
Delonix regia – Red Fire Poinciana
Family: Fabaceae
Packet Size: 10 seeds
Description
This Red Fire Poinciana seed lot comes from a striking red-flowering parent selection of Delonix regia, the celebrated Royal Poinciana or Flamboyant Tree. Its large clusters of red blossoms make a vivid contrast with the fine fern-like foliage.
Originating from Madagascar, poincianas form broad, elegant shade trees in suitable warm regions. The open, spreading crown creates an unmistakable silhouette when mature.

- Habit: Substantial spreading tree with a wide mature canopy.
Growing Conditions
- Position: Full sun and a warm, open planting location.
- Soil: Well-drained, non-waterlogged soil.
- Climate: Best in frost-free tropical and warm subtropical conditions.

Propagation from Seed
- Prepare: Gently abrade or nick the tough seed coat away from the embryo; soak overnight in warm (not boiling) water.
- Sow: Place seeds about 10–15 mm deep in clean, free-draining mix.
- Germinate: Keep warm, well-ventilated and evenly moist until emerging.
- Pot on: Shift into deeper individual pots as soon as roots are established.
Seed-Grown Variation
The “Red Fire” label describes the parent flower colour. Seed-grown poincianas can show variations in flower shade and may not reproduce a parent selection exactly.
Growing Note
Large root systems and wide branches make this tree best suited to a generous garden or park-like setting.
Germination advice: These instructions are a recommended guide. Germination results and timing may vary depending on seed freshness, storage, temperature and growing conditions. Alternative propagation methods may also be successful.
