Description
Cassia javanica – Pink Shower Tree
Family: Fabaceae
Packet Size: 8 seeds
Description
Cassia javanica is an eye-catching tropical tree whose clusters of pale-to-bright pink blooms can cover the branches in warm weather. The rounded canopy and finely divided leaves create a graceful contrast with its abundant flower sprays.
The species occurs across tropical Asia and Papuasia, and some subspecies are naturally found in far northern Queensland. Australian-native status depends on the identity and origin of the subspecies.
Key Features
- Flowers: Abundant pink blooms in attractive clusters, often covering much of the crown.
- Foliage: Paired leaflets on feather-like, compound leaves.
- Habit: A spreading flowering and shade tree suited to spacious warm gardens.
Growing Conditions
- Sun: Full sun gives the strongest flowering.
- Soil: Well-drained, moisture-retentive soil during establishment.
- Climate: Tropical and warm subtropical regions; protect young trees from frost.
- Care: Allow space for a mature canopy and avoid heavily compacted or boggy soils.
Propagation from Seed
- Prepare: Gently abrade or nick the tough seed coat, then soak overnight in lukewarm water.
- Sow: Plant approximately 10 mm deep in clean, freely draining propagation mix.
- Germinate: Maintain warmth and steady, light moisture while avoiding saturation.
- Grow on: Pot seedlings on individually as root systems develop, then harden off before outdoor planting.
Growing Note
Different subspecies have different geographic ranges. If growing specifically for Australian-native planting, confirm the seed provenance and subspecies.
Germination advice: These instructions are a recommended guide. Germination results and timing may vary depending on seed freshness, storage, temperature and growing conditions. Alternative propagation methods may also be successful.
