Description
Corymbia ficifolia – Pink-flowered Selection
Family: Myrtaceae
Packet Size: 10 seeds
Description
These seeds are offered from a pink-flowered selection of Corymbia ficifolia, the Western Australian Flowering Gum, formerly known as Eucalyptus ficifolia. Mature pink-flowered plants can produce spectacular summer clusters of soft pink to deeper rose blooms against evergreen leaves.
Corymbia ficifolia is prized for its large terminal flower clusters, rough bark and nectar for visiting birds. The appearance of the parent plant is a useful guide, but seedlings from pink-flowered or dwarf selections can grow differently and may produce red, pink, orange or other flower colours.
Important – seed-grown variation: This is seed collected from a pink-flowered parent, not a true-to-type cultivar plant. Pink blooms, small mature size and a particular growth habit are not guaranteed.
Key Features
- Parent flowers: Pink-toned summer flower clusters on the selected parent plant.
- Seedling flowers: Flower colour cannot be predicted or guaranteed from seed.
- Foliage: Typically glossy dark-green, evergreen eucalypt leaves.
- Habit: Variable from smaller specimens to much larger trees; a compact or dwarf habit is not guaranteed.
- Wildlife: Nectar-rich flowers are valued by honeyeaters, bees and other pollinators.
Growing Conditions
- Position: Full sun in an open, well-ventilated setting.
- Soil: Free-draining soil is important; avoid boggy or permanently wet sites.
- Watering: Water young plants as required through establishment, then avoid constant saturation.
- Climate: Temperate areas with lower summer humidity are generally most reliable; protect young plants from severe frost.
- Space: Plan for a potentially full-sized tree unless you are buying a specifically grafted dwarf cultivar.
Seed Propagation
- Prepare: Fill pots or a seed tray with a fine, freely draining seed-raising mix and pre-moisten it.
- Sow: Scatter the fine seeds sparingly on the surface, press gently into contact and apply at most a dusting of fine mix or sand; do not bury deeply.
- Water: Mist or water gently from below to avoid displacing the seed.
- Position: Maintain bright, filtered light and mild to warm temperatures, with protection from harsh afternoon sun.
- Moisture: Keep the surface consistently lightly moist until germination. Avoid waterlogging and fungal build-up.
- Transplant: Move seedlings to individual pots once sturdy enough to handle, protecting young roots and gradually hardening off before planting.
