Description
Xanthostemon chrysanthus – Golden Penda
Family: Myrtaceae
Packet Size: 30 seeds
Description
Xanthostemon chrysanthus, known as Golden Penda, is a spectacular rainforest native from tropical northeastern Queensland. Its rounded clusters of golden-yellow flowers can create an especially vivid display against glossy green leaves.
Golden Penda is often grown as a feature or flowering screen in larger warm-climate gardens. While it can become a substantial tree, regular pruning can maintain a smaller, bushier specimen in appropriate conditions.
Key Features
- Flowers: Dense, brilliant golden-yellow clusters carried near branch tips.
- Foliage: Evergreen, glossy green leaves with attractive new growth.
- Landscape value: Striking flowering feature tree that provides seasonal nectar for visiting wildlife.
Growing Conditions
- Light: Full sun, with some protection for young plants.
- Soil: Fertile, moist but well-drained soil is preferred.
- Climate: Grows best in tropical and subtropical climates; protect from strong frost.
- Care: Water during establishment and prune after flowering if a denser habit is wanted.
Propagation from Seed
- Seed: Use viable seed, preferably fresh. No special pretreatment is generally required.
- Sow: Sow lightly in a moist, free-draining seed-raising mix and cover only to suit the size of the seed.
- Germinate: Keep warm, bright and evenly moist. Germination may be slow or variable.
- Pot on: Grow seedlings in containers until well rooted, then harden off before planting.
Germination advice: These instructions are a recommended guide. Germination results and timing may vary depending on seed freshness, storage, temperature and growing conditions. Alternative propagation methods may also be successful.
