Description

Metrosideros excelsa – New Zealand Christmas Tree / Pōhutukawa

Family: Myrtaceae
Packet Size: Approx. 500+ seeds

Description

Native to New Zealand, Metrosideros excelsa is the much-loved Pōhutukawa, known for its brilliant red, brush-like flowers. Its dense evergreen foliage, spreading branches and often wind-sculpted form make it a striking coastal specimen.

The tree is especially associated with summer flowering around the New Zealand Christmas season. It suits larger gardens where its roots and eventual spreading canopy have sufficient room.

Key Features

• Flowers: Bright red clusters formed from many conspicuous stamens.
• Foliage: Leathery evergreen leaves often with pale or felted undersides.
• Habit: Wide-spreading coastal tree with an appealing sculptural form.

Growing Conditions

• Position: Full sun and an open site with generous space.
• Soil: Freely draining soil; established plants tolerate coastal wind and salt spray.
• Climate: Mild coastal to subtropical conditions; protect young plants from heavy frost.
• Care: Water during establishment and avoid planting close to walls, drains or confined paving.

Propagation from Seed

1. Prepare: Handle the extremely fine, lightweight seed carefully; no nicking or scratching the seed coat is required.
2. Sow: Sprinkle thinly over moist, fine, clean seed mix and press gently into the surface without burying deeply.
3. Germinate: Keep evenly moist in bright filtered light with good ventilation; protect from drying out.
4. Pot on: Prick out seedlings carefully after they have developed a few true leaves.

Growing Note

This species can self-seed in suitable climates. Consider local natural-area planting guidance and provide room for large roots and branches.

Germination advice: These instructions are a recommended guide. Germination results and timing may vary depending on seed freshness, storage, temperature and growing conditions. Alternative propagation methods may also be successful.
