Description

Acacia macradenia, or Zig Zag Wattle, is a distinctive shrub or small tree native to parts of inland and central Queensland. Its angular, zig-zagging branches and sometimes reddish new growth give it an ornamental shape even when it is not in flower.

In suitable conditions, bright golden-yellow, ball-shaped flowers appear in winter and spring. The long, gently curved green leaves form a striking contrast with the colourful flower clusters.

Key Features

  • Flowers: Bright golden-yellow globular clusters, often during winter and spring.
  • Foliage: Long, curved, green leaves; new shoots can be tinged red.
  • Habit: Spreading shrub or small tree, typically around 3–5 m tall, with angled zig-zag branches.
  • Garden uses: Feature shrub or informal screening in appropriate gardens.

Growing Conditions

  • Position: Choose a sunny position for healthy growth and flowering.
  • Soil: Best in free-draining soil; avoid prolonged waterlogging.
  • Watering: Water young plants during establishment, then according to conditions.
  • Climate: Native to parts of inland Queensland; flowering may be less reliable in some warmer coastal situations.
  • Pruning: Light pruning after flowering can help manage size, while retaining its characteristic branch form.

Seed Propagation

  • Prepare: Wattle seeds usually have a hard, water-resistant coat. Lightly rub one side with fine sandpaper or carefully nick the seed coat without harming the embryo. Soak in room-temperature water for around 12–24 hours before sowing.
  • Sow: Sow seeds about 5 mm deep in a clean, freely draining seed-raising mix.
  • Position: Keep in a warm, bright, sheltered place; protect young seedlings from harsh direct midday sun.
  • Moisture: Keep the mix consistently moist but not waterlogged.
  • Germination: Timing varies with temperature, seed age and nicking or scratching the seed coat. Allow additional time for any seeds whose coats have not softened.
  • Transplant: Move seedlings into individual pots once they have true leaves and can be handled without damage.

Growing Note: Zig Zag Wattle is regarded as an emerging environmental weed in parts of south-eastern Queensland. Check local council guidance and avoid planting where it could spread into bushland.
