Description
Leptospermum ‘Copper Glow’ – Copper-foliaged Tea-tree
Family: Myrtaceae
Packet Size: Approx. 500+ seeds
Description
Leptospermum ‘Copper Glow’, commonly listed as Leptospermum polygalifolium ‘Copper Glow’, is an eye-catching Australian tea-tree selection with rich bronze or copper-coloured new foliage. Mature leaves are greener, making a striking contrast against the fresh growth and reddish young stems.
The parent selection has a lightly arching shrub habit, reaching approximately 2–3 m tall and around 2 m wide in suitable conditions. Small white, five-petalled flowers provide a delicate seasonal display, while the foliage is attractive throughout the year. It suits native borders, relaxed hedges and feature planting.
Key Features
- Foliage: Copper-bronze new growth contrasting with older green leaves.
- Flowers: Small white blooms on the parent selection, mainly in spring or early summer.
- Habit: A medium-sized, arching evergreen shrub.
Growing Conditions
- Light: Full sun to light shade for strong foliage colour.
- Soil: Adaptable to many soils if drainage is reliable.
- Climate: Generally suited to temperate and mild subtropical climates.
- Care: Water new plants until established and prune lightly to encourage bushy, colourful regrowth.
Propagation from Seed
- Seed handling: Fine seed requires no nicking or hot-water treatment.
- Sow: Scatter sparingly over moist, free-draining seed-raising mix. Press into the surface; do not cover deeply.
- Germinate: Keep in bright filtered light, with consistent gentle moisture and good airflow.
- Grow on: Transplant rooted seedlings carefully and harden off before planting into a sunny garden bed.
Seed-Grown Variation
This seed offering is associated with the ‘Copper Glow’ parent selection. Copper colouring in seed-grown plants can vary in intensity. The original cultivar is maintained precisely by cuttings, although some seed-raised material has been reported to retain its attractive copper-toned character.
