Description
Clivia miniata – Orange Bush Lily
Family: Amaryllidaceae
Packet: 6 seeds
Description
Clivia miniata, also called Bush Lily or Natal Lily, is a South African evergreen perennial with glossy, arching strap-shaped leaves. Clumps produce upright flower stems carrying clusters of orange, funnel-shaped blooms, making this species well suited to shaded garden beds, sheltered courtyards and containers.
Key Features
- Flowers: Clusters of orange, trumpet-shaped blooms.
- Foliage: Glossy, arching, dark green strap-like leaves.
- Habit: Long-lived evergreen, clump-forming perennial.
Growing Conditions
- Position: Bright filtered light or dappled shade; protect foliage from strong afternoon sun.
- Soil: Open, well-drained potting mix with organic matter.
- Water: Keep lightly moist in active growth; reduce watering in cool weather and avoid waterlogging.
- Climate: Sheltered, frost-free conditions; suited to shade gardens and containers.
Seed Propagation
- Prepare: Use sound, fleshy seed; sow promptly where possible, without allowing it to dry out.
- Sow: Press each seed gently into the surface of a moist, free-draining seed-raising mix; do not bury deeply.
- Conditions: Keep warm (around 20–22°C) in filtered light, with the mix slightly moist, not soggy.
- Germination: Roots and shoots often develop over approximately 6–8 weeks; some seed takes longer.
Germination times are approximate. Clivias grown from seed can take several years to flower, and seedling flower colours or forms may differ from the parent plants.
