Description
Jacaranda mimosifolia – Jacaranda
Family: Bignoniaceae
Packet Size: 10 seeds
Description
Jacaranda mimosifolia is a striking South American ornamental tree celebrated for its spectacular clouds of violet-blue trumpet-shaped flowers. In a suitable warm climate, the colourful display often appears across much of its broad, open crown.
Its fine, bipinnate leaves give the canopy a soft, fern-like appearance. This is a beautiful specimen or avenue tree for properties with room for its mature canopy and seasonal leaf and flower litter.
Key Features
- Flowers: Showy panicles of violet-blue, tubular flowers.
- Foliage: Fine, feather-like compound leaves forming a light canopy.
- Habit: Medium to large spreading ornamental tree with a graceful crown.
Growing Conditions
- Position: Full sun, with generous clearance from buildings and paving.
- Soil: Free-draining soil; water young trees during establishment.
- Climate: Warm temperate to subtropical; seedlings need protection from strong frost.
- Care: Allow space for falling blossoms and train young branches for sound structure.
Propagation from Seed
- Prepare: Use fresh, mature winged seeds; nicking or scratching the seed coat is generally unnecessary.
- Sow: Place seeds flat on clean seed-raising mix and cover very lightly.
- Germinate: Keep warm in bright indirect light and lightly moist, without waterlogging.
- Pot on: Transfer established seedlings to individual pots and gradually acclimatise to full sun.
Growing Note
In some districts jacarandas can establish outside gardens; check local planting advice and avoid sowing near sensitive bushland.
Germination advice: These instructions are a recommended guide. Germination results and timing may vary depending on seed freshness, storage, temperature and growing conditions. Alternative propagation methods may also be successful.
