Description
Alloxylon flammeum – Red-Flowered Tree Waratah
Family: Proteaceae
Packet Size: 5 seeds
Description
Alloxylon flammeum, known as the Red-Flowered Tree Waratah, is a spectacular native rainforest tree from tropical northern Queensland. It is admired for its clusters of brilliant red flowers, which appear among glossy green leaves, generally in spring and early summer.
Mature trees can become very large in their natural rainforest habitat, but are often smaller in cultivation. The vivid flower clusters are attractive to nectar-feeding birds, while the evergreen foliage makes this an appealing specimen tree for suitable sheltered gardens.
Key Features
- Flowers: Striking red flowers held in clustered heads towards the ends of branches.
- Foliage: Glossy, broad green adult leaves; juvenile foliage may be larger and differently shaped.
- Habit: Evergreen rainforest tree; potentially 25–30 m in habitat and commonly smaller in gardens.
- Garden uses: Feature planting and rainforest-style gardens with room to mature.
Growing Conditions
- Position: A sheltered site with bright light; protect young trees from exposed, drying winds.
- Soil: Well-drained, moisture-retentive soil with organic matter; avoid waterlogging.
- Watering: Water regularly during establishment and provide extra moisture through extended dry spells.
- Climate: Favours warm subtropical and tropical conditions; established trees can tolerate some cool weather but hard frost may cause damage.
- Feeding: If fertilising, choose a native-plant fertiliser low in phosphorus and follow its directions.
Seed Propagation
- Prepare: Use a clean, free-draining native seed-raising mix. Fresh, sound seed is preferable where available; avoid damaging any papery seed wings.
- Sow: Lay seeds on the mix and cover lightly so they remain close to the surface.
- Position: Keep trays in bright filtered light in a sheltered, comfortably warm location.
- Moisture: Keep the mix consistently lightly moist, never saturated or left to dry out completely.
- Germination: Allow time for variable emergence; successful germination depends on seed viability and growing conditions.
- Transplant: Move seedlings to individual deep pots once strong enough to handle, taking care of developing roots.
Growing Note: This species is naturally restricted and considered vulnerable in the wild. Grow from legally supplied cultivated seed and never collect from protected wild populations without authorisation.
Germination advice: These instructions are a recommended guide. Germination results and timing may vary depending on seed freshness, storage, temperature and growing conditions. Alternative propagation methods may also be successful.
