Description
Caesalpinia pulcherrima – Golden Peacock Flower
Family: Fabaceae
Packet Size: 8 seeds
Description
Golden Peacock Flower is a yellow-flowering selection of Caesalpinia pulcherrima, a brilliantly ornamental shrub or small tree native to Central America. Its clusters of bright flowers are complemented by delicate, fern-like, twice-compound leaves.
It is a colourful choice for sunny tropical and subtropical gardens. Plants are often multi-stemmed and can be kept bushy with careful pruning; branches may bear small prickles.
Key Features
- Flowers: Showy golden-yellow peacock-flower clusters, often with long projecting stamens.
- Foliage: Fine, feathery leaves contrasting with the bold flowers.
- Habit: Upright, spreading shrub or small tree in frost-free gardens.
Growing Conditions
- Light: Full sun for the strongest flower display.
- Soil: Freely draining soil; tolerates some dryness after establishment.
- Climate: Tropical or warm subtropical gardens; protect from frost.
- Care: Allow space, avoid soggy roots and trim after flowering to shape.
Propagation from Seed
- Prepare: Very gently file or nick the hard seed coat away from the embryo, then soak in warm (not boiling) water overnight.
- Sow: Plant around 5–10 mm deep into free-draining seed-raising mix.
- Germinate: Keep warm and lightly moist, with good airflow.
- Grow on: Transfer to individual containers when roots are established and protect from frost.
Seed-Grown Variation
Seed from a golden-flowering selection can show natural variation in subsequent flower colour; individual plants may not be identical to the parent.
Growing Note
Seeds and other plant parts should not be eaten. This species can self-seed in warm climates; check local weed guidance before planting.
Germination advice: These instructions are a recommended guide. Germination results and timing may vary depending on seed freshness, storage, temperature and growing conditions. Alternative propagation methods may also be successful.
