Callistemon viminalis – Weeping Bottlebrush
Family: Myrtaceae
Packet Size: Approx. 500+ seeds
Description
Callistemon viminalis, the Weeping Bottlebrush, is a well-known Australian native shrub or small tree admired for its graceful, pendulous branches and bright scarlet-red bottlebrush blooms. It occurs naturally in eastern Australia, especially near creeks and watercourses.
The long, gently drooping shoots give this species an attractive flowing silhouette, while showy, nectar-rich flower spikes add colour in spring and sometimes again at other times of the year. In some botanical references the plant is named Melaleuca viminalis.
Key Features
- Flowers: Brilliant red bottlebrush spikes, often prominent in spring, with occasional repeat flowering.
- Foliage: Narrow evergreen leaves carried along flexible, arching branches.
- Habit: Spreading shrub to small tree, frequently 5–7 m in cultivation where conditions suit.
- Wildlife: Nectar-rich flowers are especially attractive to honeyeaters and other visiting birds.
- Garden uses: Feature tree, informal screening, larger native garden or landscape planting.
Growing Conditions
- Position: Full sun to light shade; a sunny position encourages flowering.
- Soil: Adaptable to a range of soils, including heavier and periodically wet soils.
- Watering: Provide reliable moisture when young; established plants tolerate some dry periods.
- Climate: Useful across many warm temperate and subtropical gardens; young plants can be sensitive to hard frost.
- Pruning: Trim lightly after flowering to encourage a dense canopy while keeping the elegant weeping outline.
Seed Propagation
- Prepare: Use a shallow tray or pots filled with fine-textured, freely draining seed-raising mix; moisten before sowing.
- Sow: Scatter the tiny seeds thinly onto the surface and gently press into contact with the mix. Do not cover deeply, as bottlebrush seed is very fine.
- Water: Mist carefully or water from below to avoid washing the seed into clumps or burying it.
- Position: Place in bright, sheltered light, out of intense midday sun and strong drying winds.
- Moisture: Keep the surface consistently lightly moist, never saturated, until seedlings are established.
- Transplant: Once seedlings have developed several true leaves and can be handled, pot on carefully and acclimatise gradually to stronger light.
Germination advice: These instructions are a recommended guide. Germination results and timing may vary depending on seed freshness, storage, temperature and growing conditions. Alternative propagation methods may also be successful.
