Description
Acacia podalyriifolia – Queensland Silver Wattle
Family: Fabaceae
Packet Size: 20 seeds
Description
Acacia podalyriifolia, widely known as Queensland Silver Wattle, is a striking flowering shrub or small tree recognised for its soft, silvery-grey foliage. The rounded to obliquely elliptical leaves have a lightly felted appearance that contrasts beautifully with the flowers.
In late winter and spring, masses of bright golden-yellow, ball-shaped blooms create a showy display. It is an attractive feature plant for larger sunny gardens where its foliage colour can be appreciated throughout the year.
Key Features
- Flowers: Golden, ball-shaped flower heads, especially in late winter and spring.
- Foliage: Soft, silvery-grey, obliquely oval leaves with a felt-like texture.
- Habit: Large shrub or small tree, potentially reaching approximately 8 m.
- Garden uses: Feature planting, contrasting foliage and informal screens.
Growing Conditions
- Position: Full sun for vigorous growth and generous flowering.
- Soil: Free-draining soil is important; avoid prolonged waterlogging.
- Watering: Water regularly until established, then according to rainfall and conditions.
- Climate: Native to Queensland and grown in a range of mild to temperate gardens.
- Pruning: Light pruning after flowering can help maintain a compact habit.
Seed Propagation
- Prepare: Wattle seeds usually have a hard seed coat. Carefully nick the coat or gently rub one side with fine sandpaper, avoiding the embryo. Soak in room-temperature water for about 12–24 hours before sowing.
- Sow: Place seeds about 5 mm deep in moist, freely draining seed-raising mix.
- Position: Keep in a warm, bright, sheltered position, away from harsh afternoon sun while seedlings are small.
- Moisture: Keep the medium evenly moist but not waterlogged.
- Germination: Germination varies with seed age, temperature and nicking or scratching the seed coat. Allow additional time if some seed coats remain firm.
- Transplant: Move seedlings into individual pots once they have true leaves and can be handled safely.
Growing Note: This species may self-seed outside its natural range. Check local planting guidance, especially near bushland.
