Description

Brachychiton rupestris, the Queensland Bottle Tree, is an iconic Australian native tree from the drier parts of Queensland and northern New South Wales. It is renowned for its distinctive swollen trunk, which develops gradually as the tree matures.

Young plants start with a comparatively slender trunk; the familiar bottle-like shape often becomes noticeable only after several years. The green leaves can be entire or deeply lobed, and clusters of small, cream-to-pale-yellow, bell-shaped flowers are followed by woody seed pods.

A long-lived feature tree for parks and larger gardens, it provides an unusual silhouette, seasonal shade and strong architectural character.

Key Features

  • Flowers: Small cream-to-pale-yellow, bell-shaped blooms, generally seen in spring.
  • Foliage: Green leaves that range from simple to deeply lobed; may drop seasonally.
  • Habit: Slow-developing small to medium tree with a markedly swollen, bottle-shaped trunk at maturity.
  • Garden uses: Long-term specimen planting in larger gardens, parks and open landscapes.

Growing Conditions

  • Position: Full sun with space for the eventual trunk and canopy.
  • Soil: Adaptable to a variety of soils, especially well-drained ones.
  • Watering: Water regularly while seedlings establish; mature plants are comparatively drought tolerant.
  • Climate: Tolerates warm temperate to tropical conditions; protect very young plants from severe frost.
  • Growth: Allow patience: the characteristic thickened trunk may take five years or longer to develop.

Seed Propagation

  1. Prepare: Use sound, clean, mature seeds and a clean, well-draining seed-raising mix. Special nicking or scratching the seed coat is generally unnecessary.
  2. Sow: Plant about 5–10 mm deep and cover lightly with the mix.
  3. Position: Keep in a warm, bright, sheltered place while seedlings establish.
  4. Moisture: Keep the mix lightly moist but not waterlogged.
  5. Germination: Viable seed generally germinates without pretreatment in warm conditions; timing varies.
  6. Transplant: Move seedlings into deeper pots when well rooted, taking care not to damage developing roots.

Important Note: Queensland Bottle Trees are slow to achieve their mature bottle-shaped appearance.

Germination advice: These instructions are a recommended guide. Germination results and timing may vary depending on seed freshness, storage, temperature and growing conditions. Alternative propagation methods may also be successful.
