Description
Senna didymobotrya – Popcorn Bush
Family: Fabaceae
Also known as: Cassia didymobotrya
Packet Size: 8 seeds
Description
Senna didymobotrya, commonly called Popcorn Bush or Popcorn Cassia, is a fast-growing flowering shrub native to tropical Africa. It is known for its upright spikes of bright yellow flowers, contrasting dark flower buds and distinctive aromatic foliage.
The compound leaves release a noticeable scent when rubbed, often compared with popcorn or peanut butter. In favourable warm conditions, plants commonly reach around 2–3 metres, although mature size varies with climate and growing conditions.
Its yellow blooms make it a striking specimen for warm-climate gardens. In regions where this plant can naturalise, take care to prevent unwanted seed spread and check local weed guidance before planting.
Key Features
- Flowers: Erect clusters of bright yellow flowers held above the foliage, with dark buds for contrast.
- Foliage: Green, feather-like compound leaves with a characteristic scent when handled.
- Plant Habit: Fast-growing evergreen to semi-evergreen shrub in warm conditions, commonly around 2–3 metres tall.
- Garden Uses: Ornamental flowering feature for suitable warm gardens.
Growing Conditions
- Position: Full sun for vigorous growth and flowering.
- Soil: Fertile, well-drained soil.
- Watering: Water regularly while young; provide moisture during active growth without waterlogging.
- Climate: Prefers warm tropical and subtropical conditions. Protect young plants from frost.
- Pruning: Prune as needed after flowering to manage height and encourage a bushier shape.
Seed Propagation
- Prepare: The hard seed coat may be lightly abraded with fine sandpaper or carefully nicked, avoiding damage to the seed inside. Soak in room-temperature water for approximately 12–24 hours before sowing.
- Sow: Place seeds about 5–10 mm deep in a moist, free-draining seed-raising mix.
- Position: Keep in a warm, bright location, ideally with a medium temperature around 20–25°C.
- Moisture: Keep the mix evenly moist but never saturated.
- Germination: Emergence times vary with seed condition, temperature and pretreatment. Allow extra time for seeds with an impermeable coat.
- Transplant: Pot seedlings on once they have established true leaves and are large enough to handle.
Growing Note: This species has naturalised in parts of eastern Australia. Grow responsibly, prevent seed escape and follow any applicable local restrictions.
Germination advice: These instructions are a recommended guide. Germination results and timing may vary depending on seed freshness, storage, temperature and growing conditions. Alternative propagation methods may also be successful.
