Description

Callistemon rigidus, the Stiff Bottlebrush, is a hardy Australian native evergreen shrub with noticeably narrow, rigid leaves and vivid red bottlebrush flower spikes. The firm foliage gives this species a distinct texture compared with softer-leaved bottlebrush varieties.

It is naturally found in parts of New South Wales and Queensland, including damp sandy areas and creekline habitats. Established plants may reach around 3 metres high and 2 metres wide, making them useful for mixed native borders, wildlife gardens and screening.

The colourful flower spikes, often displayed in warmer months, provide nectar for birds and pollinating insects. After flowering, woody capsules develop along the stems and hold the very fine seeds.

Key Features

  • Flowers: Bright to deep red cylindrical flower spikes, commonly seen in summer.
  • Foliage: Narrow, stiff, evergreen leaves, often several centimetres long.
  • Habit: Upright, bushy shrub, typically up to about 3 m high by 2 m wide.
  • Habitat: Native to eastern Australia, including moist heath and creekline environments.
  • Garden uses: Native wildlife planting, informal hedging, flowering borders and shrub screening.

Growing Conditions

  • Position: Full sun to light shade; full sun usually gives the best flowering.
  • Soil: Adaptable to sandy and loamy soils and generally tolerates periodically damp soils.
  • Watering: Keep young plants watered while establishing; provide moisture during prolonged dry periods.
  • Climate: Suitable for many temperate and subtropical Australian gardens.
  • Pruning: Prune lightly after flowering to encourage denser growth and reduce bare, woody stems.

Seed Propagation

  1. Prepare: Fill a shallow tray with clean, fine-textured, freely draining seed-raising mix and moisten it before sowing.
  2. Sow: Scatter the very fine seeds sparingly over the surface, pressing gently into the mix. Do not bury deeply.
  3. Water: Mist very carefully or water from below so the small seeds are not displaced.
  4. Position: Keep the tray warm with bright filtered light, sheltered from hot direct sun and drying winds.
  5. Moisture: Keep the surface consistently lightly moist, not saturated, and allow fresh air to circulate.
  6. Germination: Seedlings may appear within several weeks in suitable conditions; timing and viability vary by seed lot.
  7. Transplant: Carefully pot on well-developed seedlings after they produce true leaves and sufficient roots.

Botanical Note: This plant is widely known in horticulture as Callistemon rigidus. Some taxonomic authorities place it under Melaleuca linearis var. linearis. Seed-grown plants can show natural variation.

Germination advice: These instructions are a recommended guide. Germination results and timing may vary depending on seed freshness, storage, temperature and growing conditions. Alternative propagation methods may also be successful.
