Description
Hibiscus heterophyllus – Native Rosella / Rose Mallow
Family: Malvaceae
Packet Size: 15 seeds
Description
Hibiscus heterophyllus is a showy Australian native hibiscus found in open forests along eastern Australia. The large, open flowers give a cottage-garden feel while offering the beauty of an indigenous shrub.
Its foliage is notably variable, ranging from narrow or unlobed leaves to broad three-lobed leaves. This vigorous shrub commonly reaches around 3–6 m where conditions suit it, and responds to pruning to encourage a fuller habit.
Key Features
- Flowers: Large hibiscus blooms that can be white, pale yellow or pink, often with a contrasting red centre; flower colour can vary within the species.
- Foliage: Distinctive variable leaf shapes that add interest beyond flowering.
- Garden use: Feature shrub, flowering screen or wildlife-friendly addition to suitable native gardens.
Growing Conditions
- Light: Full sun or lightly shaded positions.
- Soil: Well-drained garden soil with some moisture while plants establish.
- Climate: Suited to warm temperate and subtropical gardens; protect young plants from severe frost.
- Care: Tip-prune when young or prune after flowering to encourage compact growth.
Propagation from Seed
- Prepare: No pretreatment is essential. Lightly abrading the seed coat or soaking in water before sowing can hasten germination.
- Sow: Place seeds around 5 mm deep in clean, free-draining seed-raising mix.
- Germinate: Keep warm and evenly moist, with bright filtered light while seedlings establish.
- Pot on: Move young plants into individual pots once roots and several true leaves have developed.
Seed-Grown Variation
Native rosella naturally shows a range of flower colours. Seedlings may flower white, pink or yellow rather than matching a particular parent plant.
